SUNGLASSES

When should you wear them?

Sunglasses should be worn to eliminate the discomfort and the effects of the harmful UV and infra red radiation emitted by the sun which can cause long term damage to the eye which may not be reversible to avoid this damage a good pair of sunglasses which will reduce the amount of glare and UV radiation reaching the eye and protecting it against the damage caused by the sun.

When there is a high level of UV radiation such as at the snow or beach can cause the eye to become inflamed this condition can be extremely painful and can be prevented by wearing a good pair of UV protective glasses in these conditions.

Differences in lens types:
Tinted:
To be an effective pair of sunglasses should screen about 75-90 percent of the available visible light. If colour accuracy is essential then a grey tint is essential because it does not affect the colour seen. Fashion tints however do not block out adequate sun light to be classified as sunglasses.

Polarising:
Polarising lenses screen out the horizontal glare caused by snow, water or from the road. They screen out UV rays from the sun and are also available in prescription sunglasses.

Photochromic:
Commonly known as light sensitive lenses, the photochromic lenses darken when they are exposed to sunlight. To be effective they should screen out 75-90 percent of the visible light.

Reflective lenses:
A thin sheet of metallic coating is added to the lenses to produce a mirrored appearance, they are designed to be used in high glare conditions such as at the snow or water. Some reflective lenses absorb both UV and infrared rays.
